Grab those tissues. No, put the hand lotion down. Perverts. You need those for crying. The final installment of power rankings for the 2015-16 regular season is here.

We will spend our final time together focusing on the playoff picture and first-round matchups. The Golden State Warriors are still the best team ever, the Chicago Bulls remain a shit show, the Memphis Grizzlies continue to make you sad, the New York Knicks don’t yet have any idea what they’re doing, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are left to cross their fingers that they don’t meet the Boston Celtics in or before the Eastern Conference Finals.

Let’s power rank one last time, shall we?

With April on the horizon, so too are the NBA playoffs. And the league’s power structure is getting topsy turvy as a result.

The Golden State Warriors are still chasing history, because, well, the Golden State Warriors chase history. The San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder have all entered rest and relaxation mode. The Los Angeles Clippers are just trying to bide time until Blake Griffin’s return. The Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics are staving off miniature slumps. The post-All-Star-break Miami Heat are still terrifying.

And then there’s the Atlanta Hawks, the league’s forgotten contender. They’ve started playing like a premier contender again. They have moved up to third in the Eastern Conference standings and boast one of the Association’s most formidable defenses.

Is their rise for real? Are they a threat to the Cavaliers and the Raptors? And might this new, defense-first style leave them better equipped to grind out victories in the postseason.

All this, and more. So much more.

Let’s power rank.

NBA Power Rankings Washington Wizards

It has finally happened: There is movement within the top-most part of our NBA power rankings.

The Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs still sit where they sit, and the Toronto Raptors refuse to relinquish fifth place. But chaos has been restored just about everywhere else, in large part because the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards are going streaking, while the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers and, to some degree, the Los Angeles Clippers are immersing themselves in untimely slumps.

The Oklahoma City Thunder, meanwhile, are kind-of-sort-of learning how to close out games. The Cleveland Cavaliers are winning, then losing, only to win again, but in the least fun way imaginable. The Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks are still the NBA’s foremost tire fires, and the Memphis Grizzlies continue to tread water like only the Memphis Grizzlies can.

As an inside, injuries are afoot. Jodie Meeks won’t be returning to the Detroit Pistons, who remain on the outskirts of the Eastern Conference playoff bubble, this season. Chandler Parsons might be done for the year in Dallas after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee. Anthony Davis is unequivocally done for the year as he rehabs a variety of bumps and bruises and torn labrums that didn’t receive correct treatment for three years.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Let’s power rank.

Brace yourselves: This marks the fifth consecutive week in which there is no change within the top seven of our NBA power rankings.

We’re not even talking regardless of order, either. The streak would be longer if we cared not for the exact position of every top-seven team. But we do care, and the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics have all held firm in their present spots for over a month without moving even a little. That’s absurd.

Also absurd: The Eastern Conference’s clunky middle class. It’s just as chaotic as it was the week before, and the week before that, and the week before that.

Absurd still: The Houston Rockets may have found their defensive mojo.

Not absurd but nonetheless important: It’s time to power rank.

Charlotte Hornets Power Rankings

Here’s to elitist consistency!

Never, in the history of these power rankings, has the NBA’s top-most block been more unchanging. The top-10 squads are pretty much set for the rest of the season. They might jostle for position among one another, and there are a few wild cards, such as the Charlotte Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers, who could play themselves outside of this exclusive clique. But, for the most part, the Association’s upper echelon is ironclad.

Any and all movement has come outside that group of studs, the one headlined by an unwavering top-six performers in the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers.

We have a new worst team in the league this week (shoutout, Philadelphia 76ers), while our King of the Middle remains the same (shoutout, Memphis Grizzlies). Some teams have suffered substantive drops (shoutout, Dallas Mavericks), others have enjoyed considerable rises (shoutout, Denver Nuggets).

Without further delay, let’s power rank.

NBA Power Rankings

Is the NBA getting predictable?

That’s a question we’re left to ask ourselves after blazing through this addition of the NBA power rankings.

There are some surprises, sure. But, for the most part, movement is stifled. The top one-third of the league remains pretty stationary, while the five to seven bottom-most feeders are jostling for position only among themselves.

Most of the changes come in the middle, where a handful of mediocre teams are championing welcomed chaos. The Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies are exchanging barbs, and it makes for a highly interesting, incredibly clunky cadre of middling factions.

Oh, and the Portland Trail Blazers. They’re pretty good.

Yes, the Golden State Warriors are still making a mockery of opponents. And sure, the San Antonio Spurs are quietly historical. But the Blazers, preordained one of those bottom-feeders, are legitimate and, against all offseason logic, are going to make for a tough first-round out, irrespective of who they’re playing.

Let’s power rank.

Smell that?

It’s the scent of the NBA’s stretch run.

Urgency is officially overtaking the Association. Teams still have more than one-quarter of their schedule left to play, but the ramifications of early-season happenings are becoming real.

The Portland Trail Blazers are rising; the Houston Rockets are falling; the Chicago Bulls are standing steady after free falling themselves; the New Orleans Pelicans are on a treadmill to nowhere; the New York Knicks have squandered what could have been an encouraging season; the Oklahoma City Thunder are coming to grips with being great, even super great, but still not great enough; and the Eastern Conference’s middle class is a clusterfuck of fringe contenders all vying for the rights to a first- or, if they’re lucky, second-round exit.

Now seems like a pretty good time for some power rankings, doesn’t it?

The NBA returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 18. Incidentally, that’s the same day as the league’s trade deadline. I’m sure that won’t be a chaotic time at all. It will be totally easy and breezy and bereft of any activity whatsoever.

Not.

This is your look at where every team stands entering that deadline, as they prepare to finish out the regular season. There hasn’t been a ton of movement because, again, games haven’t been played. But trades, trade rumors and injuries have helped reshape the weekly landscape.

Everyone have their trade-deadline pants on?

Celtics NBA Power Rankings

Here we come, NBA All-Star break.

Which means here comes the NBA playoffs!

More than half of the Association’s 2015-16 season is in the books, and save for a cluster of steady teams at the top of our power rankings, the league’s hierarchy knows no order. For every certainty like the Warriors, Spurs, Cavaliers and Thunder, there are two patented unknowns such as the Knicks, Grizzlies, Mavericks, Pacers, Heat, Bulls, Jazz and Hawks (see what I did???).

These rankings attempt to provide some context on what has, at times, been an unflatteringly crazy campaign. So if you’re looking to see where your favorite team stands relative to the rest of the league, conference seeding be damned, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s power rank.

NBA Power Rankings Sixers

Half of the 2015-16 NBA season is in the books.

Pat yourself on the back. You’ve done it.

You’ve watched, you’ve cheered, you’ve moaned. You’ve wondered why it’s taken the Suns so damn long to sell off Markieff Morris. You’ve pondered the meaning of life whenever the Spurs or Warriors take the floor.

You’ve lamented the Sixers’ pivot from Sam Hinkie’s process. You’ve secretly enjoyed Philly’s subsequent miniature rise following the deviation from Sam Hinkie’s process.

You’ve thought about the Cavaliers and the Thunder, about how they’re both great, and about how they’re both still not good enough. You’ve entertained the idea that the Clippers maybe, quite possibly, should trade Blake Griffin.

You’ve been impressed by the Raptors, seduced by the Celtics and disappointed by the Pelicans.

Most of all, you’ve been here, following along, even as the NFL, like it always does, has eclipsed the first half of the NBA season. So congratulations! You’re reward is a cookie and some power rankings.

I’ll bring the power rankings. You bring the cookie.

Oh, hello there, 2016.

We almost didn’t see you come in, not with the 2015-16 NBA season unfolding exactly how it wasn’t supposed to.

Sure, we knew the Spurs would be really good, even if we didn’t know they’d be historically awesome. We knew the Warriors would be great. We knew the Cavaliers would be, too. And we had a feeling the Clippers, Thunder, Bulls and Hawks would all have their moments and stretches.

Beyond that, we knew nothing. We didn’t know how badly the Rockets would struggle. How hard the Jazz would be hit by injuries. How sad-happy the Mavericks and Raptors would play. How terribly terrible, even if their record doesn’t show it, the Grizzlies would look.

So let’s get to talking about all we didn’t know but think we now know even though we really don’t know a gotdamn thing about what we think we know.

NBA Power Rankings Clippers

Goodbye, 2015. It’s been real, often fun. Sometimes even real fun. But it’s time we bid you adieu.

Just not before we send you off with one last batch of NBA power rankings.

The Association is niche-y as ever these days. The championship contender pool contains only Cleveland, Golden State and San Antonio, with Oklahoma City trying to scratch and claw its way back into the mix. The Clippers and Rockets may have started to figure things out, but we can’t be sure. We can, however, be sure that the Grizzlies’ championship-chasing days are over.

Out east, the middle class is thick with mediocre teams pining for low-end playoff berths. The Knicks and Wizards are doing their damnedest to play themselves outside postseason contention, but the Hornets, Pistons, Celtics and Magic are trying like hell to make that race for the seventh and eighth seeds interesting.

Not that those teams are pigeonholed to seventh and eighth place. There is the potential for them to move up. Almost anyone can move up. A mere four games separates the first-place Cavaliers from the 10th-place Pistons. Things are bound to get wild as the 2015-16 schedule winds down.

Actually, things are about to get wild right now, as we survey the NBA’s competitive landscape for one last time in 2015.

warriors

Golden State Warriors

So, the Warriors have basically been winning like the 1995-96 Bulls for an entire year. They’re now 71-11 since Jan. 1, 2015. Just some food for thought.

It’s crystal clear that the Thunder are the third-best team in the NBA. And yet the gap between them and the Warriors and Spurs is still so wide, it doesn’t really matter.

Cleveland Cavaliers

No team in the NBA is better at playing down to the level of their opponent than the Cavaliers.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks are back…just not in a 60-win-juggernaut sort of way.

up

Last Week (9)

6

Boston Celtics

Jae Crowder’s contract looks better and better each game. He’s the most important defender for the NBA’s second-best defense, and his three-point stroke can finally be called “above average.” Now, if only the Celtics could piece together some semblance of consistency on the offensive end, they would be sitting pretty.

Paul George and friends have cooled off, but their Monday night victory over the Hawks was nevertheless a statement of the “We’re still here” persuasion.

Toronto Raptors

Of all the teams in the East, none poses a bigger threat to the Cavaliers right now than the Raptors. That’s admittedly not saying much, since we know what a shorthanded Cleveland team did to Atlanta during the Eastern Conference Finals, but it’s still a testament to how far Toronto has come defensively.

Do not trust the Heat’s offense. After their loss to the Nets, I’m inclined to remain skeptical about their defense as well.

Los Angeles Clippers

Losing Blake Griffin for a few weeks isn’t ideal and, in theory, should only prevent the Clippers from returning to championship contender form. But Chris Paul is an animal and the team is streaking. The Clippers, on the back of their offense, might be able to gain some momentum after all.

Detroit is right there, on the cusp of something great, but needs an offensive boost. The Pistons are fielding a top-five offense when Reggie Jackson is on the floor, and a bottom-two attack when he’s off. That’s a problem.

Half of the Nuggets’ roster is battling injuries, yet you wouldn’t know it looking at the way they’re able to play at the beginning of games. Joffrey Lauvergne and Nikola Jokic are studs, and Denver has an outside chance of re-entering the West’s playoff picture.

NBA Power Rankings

Our power rankings introduction is, for one week only, about to change.

Most of the time, we wax distasteful snark that recaps all of the NBA’s major happenings over the past week, an approach aimed at teaching a crash course in almost everything you need to know. This week, though, you only need to know one thing: The Spurs are absolute monsters.

Following their beat down of the Jazz on Monday night, the Spurs now own the Association’s best net rating, placing themselves ahead of even the historically great Warriors. And they’ve arrived here, lording over most of mankind, while flying under the radar despite deploying a top-three offense and defense.

Something tells me that, like in years past, this is about to change.

The Spurs aren’t coming, they’re here, and they’re taking no prisoners.

More than a month into the 2015-16 NBA regular season, everything is just as we thought it would be.

LOL, jk.

Much about the league’s landscape does make sense. The Warriors are godlike. The Spurs are right behind them. No one in the Eastern Conference can touch the Cavaliers.

Not much else makes sense, though.

The Clippers, Rockets and Wizards are struggling, while the Pacers and Hornets are threatening to take over the world. The Magic are inching toward the East’s playoff bubble, while the Bucks continue to accidentally tank. The Timberwolves are flirting with Western Conference playoff contention, while the Pelicans drift further and further into the abyss.

Weird things are happening in the Association, and we’re here to cope the only way we know how: by power ranking the chaos.

Because the 2014-15 NBA regular season is over.

And you made it.

Now it’s off to the playoffs, which begin Saturday. And thank heavens for the brief respite in between Game 82 and the postseason’s onset. The league’s playoff picture was sheathed in butter-thick smog until the bitter end. Almost nothing was for certain until the season was over. It was equal parts brutal and freaking awesome.

Ahead of your reward for enduring such madness, we power rank for the last time this season. Fear not, we’ll be back. Maybe. If you ask nicely.

As always, remember that playoff seeds aren’t weighted here. There is a heavy recency bias, but we also take into account a team’s entire body of work. Records are basically, but not quite, discarded in the trash. We care only about ranking the NBA’s best teams, as of right now, from top to bottom.

For one last time.

Rasual Butler is Washington’s MVP of the second unit. So, yeah…

Portland Trail Blazers

Shit is getting real bad real quick in Portland. After one season of good health, the injury gods are smiting the Blazers six ways toward a first-round exit.

Last Week (13)

14

Oklahoma City Thunder

Chin up, Oklahoma City. Your team’s title window will reopen next season. As for the one after that, well, let’s talk following KD’s foray into free agency.

Last Week (14)

15

Boston Celtics

Congrats, Boston. Y’all accidentally nabbed a playoff berth. Best of luck in your four-game series with the Cavs.

Utah Jazz

Compelled to reiterate what I wrote last week: ‘Tis a shame the Utah Jazz aren’t the Rhode Island Jazz. Because then they’d be in the East, preparing for a playoff berth.

Last Week (16)

17

Indiana Pacers

Paul George hit the floor and was carried off in Indy’s loss to Memphis. It was not cool. Also, the Pacers have some cap-finagling to do this offseason.

Last Week (18)

18

Milwaukee Bucks

Poor Bucks. They were fated for a first-round exodus no matter what, but against the Bulls, they won’t play a single home game.

Brooklyn Nets

Brooklyn had us fooled for a little bit, playing like an actual basketball team and stuff. The Hawks should take care of that.

Miami Heat

Pat Riley better grab his wand ahead of the offseason. He has some magic to work

Last Week (19)

Detroit Pistons

Apparently the Pistons think Greg Monroe is a max-contract guy. And apparently the Knicks are right there with them. Thus, we can conclude that New York’s and Detroit’s front offices shouldn’t be trusted with cap space.

Phoenix Suns

Someone explain to me which direction the Suns are traveling in. Please? Anyone?

Denver Nuggets

Torn between the Nuggets keeping Melvin Hunt and hiring Mike D’Antoni. Ideally, they hire MDA and Hunt stays on as an assistant.

Charlotte Hornets

Yeah, this team is awful. Probably shouldn’t have invested in Kemba Walker this past fall and instead blown their offensive crapfest to smithereens. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist looks like the lone keeper.

Orlando Magic

In the event Elfrid Payton returns for his sophomore campaign with a jump shot, Orlando’s offense will finally be fun to watch.

Last Week (26)

Los Angeles Lakers

T minus two and a half months until the Lakers foolishly offer Rajon Rondo a lucrative contract.

Philadelphia 76ers

Should the Sixers fail to draft or acquire another point guard, they totally have to sign Jeremy Lin, right?

Last Week (28)

New York Knicks

Moral of the story: The Knicks cannot even tank properly.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Karl Anthony-Towns better be in Minnesota (or New York) next season, otherwise I’m going to cry ALL the tears.
