Going back to the latter parts of the collegiate season and into March Madness, University of Kansas shooting guard Ben McLemore was regarded as the best shooting guard prospect for the 2013 NBA Draft.

After showing some incredible athleticism and at times, lights out perimeter shooting during his redshirt freshman season in Lawrence, McLemore was drawing rave reviews, was regularly compared to future NBA Hall of Famer Ray Allen, and even was potentially projected as the #1 overall pick in Thursday’s Draft.

But even after averaging a team high 15.9 ppg, 5.2 reb, shooting .420 3PT%, earning consensus All American status, and being a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year Award, McLemore as the top pick was still a longshot, considering that a shooting guard hasn’t been taken #1 in over 40 years.

According to multiple sources, McLemore has flat-out bombed in interviews and was a non-factor in workouts.  He was particularly brutal in Phoenix, who has the 5th pick pick on Thursday, to the point that noted ESPN Draft guru Chad Ford went on record calling out McLemore for his lack of preparation leading up to Draft day……

“McLemore remains in the top 5, but I’m starting to have my doubts. I love the talent. But his lack of preparation for the draft is hurting him. Multiple sources told me that his workout in Phoenix was not impressive; he wasn’t in shape, and he struggled to keep up in the workout. I heard similar things in Orlando. McLemore is in a tug-of-war right now between adviser Rodney Blackstock and his agency Rivals. It’s kept McLemore out of the gym and for the most part, out of workouts. How much will all of this affect the draft stock? I’m told teams are worried.

McLemore and Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel are arguably the two players in this year’s draft that have superstar potential down the road but his lack of a killer instinct has already begun to hurt his stock.

Character issues have begun to come up as rumors persist that his AAU coach once took money from an agent and he has been labeled as a kid that let’s others have too much say in how to handle things, which is disappointing.

It wouldn’t be the first time that a team has “dug up some dirt” on a prospect in hopes that the prospect falls a bit lower in the draft, so they could draft him for themselves but there are far too many teams reporting the same issues.

One Mock has McLemore falling as low as #7 to Sacramento even though has has a textbook release on his jumper and compares favorably with the all time 3 point king.

Check out some Ben McLemore highlights….

For the 2nd time in 3 seasons, the Cleveland Cavaliers have secured the #1 overall pick in the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft.  Putting all of the conspiracy theories aside, that’s a pretty quick shot in the arm when it comes to not only recovering but rebuilding after Lebron James left Cleveland for South Beach a full 3 seasons ago.

Many fans and experts initially balked when the Cavaliers selected Duke’s Kyrie Irving, who suffered through injuries and played in only 11 games on the collegiate level, with the top selection in 2011.  But they quickly changed their tune after seeing just how talented and NBA ready the former Blue Devil point guard was in winning the 2012 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Then last season, Cleveland once again secured another Lottery pick and selected Syracuse’s 6th man Dion Waiters as an additional building block besides Irving in the backcourt.  Waiters definitely had his detractors as he struggled early in the season but finished strong to rank statistically among the top rookies from the ’12-’13 season.

With promising young players in tow like Irving, Waiters, and former Texas big man Tristan Thompson, it has been widely speculated that the Cavs would focus on selecting the best big man available in Thursday’s NBA Draft.

For the majority of the last few months, injured Kentucky shot-blocker Nelens Noel had been considered the top prospect on the board, according to THD’s latest 2013 NBA Mock Draft 3.0.  In limited action during the regular season, the dominating, defensive oriented 7 footer showed he has the athletic ability to change the game like very few players before him, especially when it comes to defending the painted area.

But similarly to fellow formerly highly touted collegiate freshman Shabazz Muhammed, Noel’s stock has slid as of late amid concerns that he wasn’t able to work out for any teams because he is rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered midway through last season.

It was reported that Noel injured the same knee in high school, and considering the recent history of oft injured big men in the Draft Lottery(see Greg Oden), it would be completely rational if the Cavs were to explore all of their options prior to Thursday night’s selection.

Enter Maryland’s 7 foot, multi-talented big man Alex Len, who made some tremendous strides in his two seasons playing for the Terps.  Len is much more talented offensively than Noel, and nearly 50 lbs heavier, considering his listed weight of 255 lbs.

In one lone, head-to-head matchup early in the ’12-’13 college season, Len dominated Noel to the tune of 23 points, 12 boards, and 4 blocks,  while Noel tallied just 4 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

To be fair, Len only scored 20 points against one other opponent the remainder of the season and had mediocre stats of 11.9 ppg, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game as a sophomore, while Noel would go on to set the Kentucky record for blocked shots in a game with 12 and was leading the nation in blocked shots(4.4) before suffering a season ending ACL injury in February.

While Noel is projected to be out until at least December, Len should be fully recovered from ankle surgery in time for NBA Training Camp in late September or October.

Would Nerlens Noel or Alex Len be a better fit alongside Top 5 NBA point guard Kyrie Irving?

With only a few weeks remaining until the 2013 NBA Draft, every NBA team should be doing their homework and scouring tape to get the skinny on each and every prospect in this year’s crop of players.

Especially in a year where most experts agree that there are no real All Star caliber superstars, it is even more important for teams to leave no stone unturned in an attempt to get the best value for their pick, which may even include dipping into either Division II, III, or the NAIA .

In the past, there have been very few players to make it to the highest level of basketball from smaller schools in the subdivisions like former NBA Defensive POY Ben Wallace, Darrell Armstrong, and Ronald”Flip” Murray.  In addition, according to the NBA, only 9 players have ever made the jump from Division III straight to the Association.

Because of some tremendous financial restraints from the multi-year contracts handed out to Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, and Tyson Chandler, the New York Knicks may be one of those teams willing to dip deeper into the lower levels of college basketball or even trade out of their #24 pick in the 1st Round in an effort to sign a player on the cheap.

Based on a recent article in the NY Post, the Knicks haven’t had to look very far as they have their sights set on an athletic 7 foot center from nearby Long Island, who just happens to be a Division III standout at Farmingdale State University.

Not much footage is available of senior AJ Mathews, but several teams in addition to the Knicks have shown significant interest in the suddenly promising prospect who wasn’t even invited to the Chicago pre-draft camp earlier this month.

Now this isn’t a joke, or some publicity stunt like a few years ago, when a Division III player that averaged a paltry 2 ppg entered his name in the 2010 NBA Draft, in an effort to impress his friends and tell his grandkids that he once was in the same draft as John Wall and Evan Turner.

In addition to the Knicks looking for a back-up point guard to spell both Ray Felton and the aging Jason Kidd in this year’s draft, another big with a penchant for defense and rebounding may fit the bill, especially with Stoudemire looking like a shell of his former self, Rasheed Wallace retiring, and Marcus Camby nearing 40.

Albeit against lesser competition, Mathews fits a definite need as the Division III All American 1st Teamer averaged 22.4 ppg, 16.3 reb, 3.75 blocks, aided by a phenomenal 7’3 wingspan.  He has reportedly already signed with the famous Arn Tellem agency as he has an individual workout scheduled with the Knicks this week.

Now that the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery is over and Cleveland has secured the top overall pick for the 2nd time in 3 seasons, followed by the Orlando Magic at #2, and the Washington Wizards at #3, it’s time to once again unveil THD’s newest Mock Draft.  Check out our Mock Draft Database for a peak at some other Mocks from around the web.

With he official draft order now set, we can take into account team needs in making our selections.  While there may not be a stand-out star at or near the top of this year’s draft, it is deep as far as talent throughout the 1st Round.  Top prospects for the #1 selection include Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel, Kansas’ Ben McLemore, Georgetown’s Otto Porter Jr, and Michigan’s Trey Burke.

As such, these Mock Draft rankings are based on potential with this year’s Draft order based on Draft Lottery results and any outstanding trades.  These are only my choices and not the consensus picks of all of The Hoop Doctors writers, with that said here is my 2013 Mock Draft:Version 3.0.

Draft Order College Team Player Position Physical

1.

Cle

Kentucky Nerlens Noel
C 6’11 206lbs Freshman
While rumors persist that Cleveland may be interested in trading the top overall pick, Noel remains the most talented prospect with the most potential in this year’s Draft.  Any team selecting the super athletic shot-blocker will have to wait until at least Christmas as he is rehabbing a torn ACL.  If Cleveland takes Noel at 1, they may not see results until year 2 or 3 as his slender frame remains a concern as a starting center but can be a game-changer on defense from the onset.  Comparison: Marcus Camby

2.

Orl

Kansas Ben McLemore
SG 6’5 190lbs Freshman
As this year’s most technically sound perimeter shooter, McLemore could go as high as 1, as he and Noel are the perceived best prospects available at the top.  Although erratic as a redshirt freshman last season, McLemore could be one of the lone future stars in this year’s draft, and fits well into the Magic’s future rebuilding plan.Comparison: Ray Allen

3.

Was

Georgetown Otto Porter Jr
SF 6’9 195lbs Sophomore
The reigning Big East Player of the Year wouldn’t have to travel far from Georgetown to play for the Wizards as he would provide another building block alongside John Wall and Brad Beal going forward.  Porter is perhaps the most complete player in this draft, capable of helping immediately as an elite scorer and lock-down defender.  It wouldn’t be a shock if Cleveland reaches for Porter as their SF of the future.Comparison: Andre Iguodala

4.

Cha

UNLV
Anthony Bennett
PF 6’7 240lbs Freshman
The next trending and talented prospect hailing from Canada, Bennett is a high risk-high reward type player that can score from anywhere on the floor.  He was arguably the nation’s top freshman this year for the Rebels, as both a low post presence and perimeter scorer.  Although a bit short for PF, Bennett already has an NBA physique, and would give Charlotte a much needed scorer.Comparison: Larry Johnson

5.

Pho

 Indiana Victor Oladipo
SG 6’4 215lbs Sophomore
Arguably the most improved player in college basketball last season, Oladipo is mostly known as a defensive stopper but possesses supreme athleticism, and a much improved offensive game.  He finishes through contact as well as any player in the nation and could be a diamond in the rough as a rare two-way potential All Star.  Oladipo fits nicely alongside Goran Dragic in the backcourt.Comparison: Tony Allen

6.

NO

Maryland Alex Len
C 7’1 255lbs Sophomore
Despite nursing a stress fracture injury, most GM’s are very high on the legit 7 footer, with offensive skill and impressive mobility.  Len runs the floor like a gazelle, plays well at the rim, and has outstanding touch to 15 feet.  He improved tremendously from freshman to sophomore seasons and would be a perfect compliment to last year’s top pick Anthony Davis at center.Comparison: Jonas Valanciunas

7.

Sac

Michigan Trey Burke
PG 6’1 185lbs Sophomore
This season’s NCAA Player of the Year may not overwhelm you with his size but more than makes up for it with heart, skill, intelligence, and unwavering desire to be the best.  Burke was phenomenal all season, helping the Wolverines win a Tourney game for the first time in decades.  Although Isaiah Thomas shined last season at PG as a 2nd Round surprise, Burke has a better pedigree as a more complete player with a higher ceiling.Comparison: Kemba Walker

8.

Det

Syracuse
Michael Carter-Williams
PG 6’5 175lbs Freshman
Possessing extreme size and length for the point guard position, Carter-Williams was both fantastic and an enigma at Syracuse.  Surely coach Boeheim lost a bit more hair amid some ill-advised turnovers and at times bad shot selection but he also has gone on record stating that Michael was one of the best players he ever had at Syracuse.  In Detroit, the Brandon Knight experiment at PG hasn’t played out as expected.  Drafting Carter-Williams would allow Knight to slide to SG, to highlight his elite perimeter shooting.  His combination of size at the position, defensive abilities, and elite potential far outweigh the downside.Comparison: Penny Hardaway

9.

Min

Lehigh CJ McCollum
PG/SG 6’3 195lbs Senior
Despite missing the latter part of his senior season with a broken leg, McCollum looks to benefit from the recent success from fellow small school performers in recent years like Norris Cole and 2013 ROY Damian Lillard.  He’s a 3 time Patriot League POY, that plays up in big games(beating Duke in 2012 NCAA Tourney), shoots better than 50% on threes, and was leading the nation in scoring at the time of his injury.  Minnesota has been looking for their next SG since Brandon Roy got injured, making McCollum a hot commodity in the Lottery.Comparison: Stephen Curry

10.

Por

Georgia Kantavious Caldwell-Pope
SG 6’5 205lbs Sophomore
While not a household name because of Georgia’s recent struggles in the SEC, KCP is an elite scorer and 3 point shooter with advanced athleticism that makes him one of the nation’s best finishers at the rim.  The former highly touted HS prospect improved as much as any from freshman to sophomore seasons and is viewed as not yet a finished project.  His prototypical size for SG would mesh well with Lillard at the point and Nicolas Batum at SF.Comparison: Michael Redd

11.

Phi

UCLA Shabazz Muhammed
SG 6’6 225lbs Freshman
Even though his stock has taken a recent hit over lying about his age and attitude concerns, Muhammed remains one of the best pure scorers in this draft.  He’s proven to be almost exclusively left-handed and is a below average passer, but could give you 20 points on any given night.  Former #2 overall pick Evan Turner hasn’t lived up to the hype and All Star PG Jrue Holiday needs some help in the Philly backcourt.Comparison: James Harden

12.

OKC

Indiana Cody Zeller
C 7’0 230lbs Sophomore
After being exposed in the NCAA Tournament, Zeller’s stock took a hit as a soft player.  He’s again on the rise after exploding off the charts at the Draft Combine and would be a perfect fit as a big that can run the floor alongside Durant and Westbrook.  He’s the most fundamental big man in this year’s draft, and may prove to make Kendrick Perkins days in OKC numbered.Comparison: LaMarcus Aldridge

13.

Dal

Michigan Tim Hardaway Jr
SG 6’6 190lbs Junior
While the Lottery may be a reach for the Michigan junior, he’s undeniably an elite scorer and 3 point threat, something the Mavs desperately need as Dirk Nowitzki gets older.  Hardaway Jr has NBA genes, prototypical size for SG, and finishes well at the rim.  Some concerns remain about a slender frame and lack of defensive prowess but the Mavericks will look to improve on the cheap as they make another push for free-agents-to-be Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.Comparison: Kevin Martin

14.

Utah

Germany Dennis Schroeder
PG 6’2 170lbs International
The lightning quick floor general burst onto the scene, starring at this year’s Nike Hoops Summit alongside Andrew Wiggins, and has steadily risen on most Mock Drafts.  He has video game-like handles, a capable offensive game, and has gotten better by leaps and bounds in recent months.  Although he has decent height, his slender 170lb frame is cause for concern.Comparison: Darren Collison

15.

Mil

France
Rudy Gobert
C 7’1 230lbs International
Possessing an unreal 7’9 wingspan, the fabulous Frenchman has been on the NBA’s radar for a few seasons but needed some seasoning overseas.  He had an average year statistically in Europe but shined against similar prospects at the Draft Combine.  Gobert would give the Bucks the lost inside presence when Andrew Bogut was traded to Golden State.Comparison: Rick Smits

16.

Bos

Croatia Dario Saric
SF 6’10 235lbs International
After dominating any and all competition in the European U-18 Championships this Summer, Saric is an intriguing International prospect. Although he has the size and low post moves to play in the paint, he possesses above average ball-handling and passing skills that translate to all 5 positions on the floor. Turning only 19 during the 2013 calendar year, many will view Saric as the “next” Dirk Nowitzki because of his advanced offensive skill at such a young age.Comparison: Toni Kukoc

17.

Atl

Louisville Gorgui Dieng
C 7’0 245lbs Junior
One of the nation’s best shot-blockers, the already 23 year old Dieng proved his worth on a national stage, helping Louisville capture the 2013 National Title.  He has legitimate NBA size, with a humongous 7’3 wingspan, and a better than advertised low post game.  Adding Dieng would allow All Star big man Al Horford to move to his more natural PF position.  Comparison: Roy Hibbert

18.

Atl

Georgia Tech
Glen Rice Jr
SG 6’6 210lbs D-League
The son of former NBA great Glen Rice, Jr has taken the hard road to the big leagues, after being kicked off the Georgia Tech team, and toiling in the D-League.  After an outstanding showing at the Combine, Rice Jr is skyrocketing up draft boards, possessing prototypical size and abilities for the SG position.  If teams can look past his collegiate red flags, Rice could be a sleeper value pick providing elite perimeter scoring like his father once did.  Comparison: Glen Rice Sr.

19.

Cle

Russia Sergey Karasev
SF 6’7 195lbs International
Still only 19 years of age, Karasev had a breakout season in Russia and projects as an elite shooting SF with tremendous potential.  Some see him as a smaller version of Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, but that’s probably a stretch.  Cleveland can definitely use another shooter as part of their young core, but Karasev may remain in Europe another season to work on his frame.  Comparison: Marco Bellinelli

20.

Chi

San Diego St
Jamal Franklin
SG 6’5 195lbs Junior
One of the nation’s most athletic players, Franklin is a do-it-all  wing that really doesn’t have a natural position but will be a legitimate insurance policy if the Bulls decide to deal Luol Deng.  At this point, he’s more of a slasher than shooter but brings energy and enthusiasm, especially on defense.  Some character issues over flipping off some fans may hurt his stock.  Comparison: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

21.

Uta

Duke
Mason Plumlee
C 7’0 235lbs Senior
A NCAA Player of the Year finalist, Plumlee finally showed some of the projected talent once heaped upon him as a freshman.  He has legitimate 7 foot frame, back-to-the-basket low post game, to go with some impressive athleticism for a player his size.  Plumlee was a double-double machine as a senior and played at a top tier program under an elite coaching staff.  With uncertainty surrounding Paul Milsap and Al Jefferson in free agency, Plumlee is a no brainer late in the 1st Round.  Comparison: Meyers Leonard

22.

BK

Greece Giannis Adetokoubo
SF 6’9 215lbs International
This year’s International man of mystery, Adetokoubo played well overseas against subpar competition but is intriguing to a number of NBA teams in need of a super athletic small forward.  He has outstanding size and abilities as a still only 19 year old prospect but could remain in Greece for another season if selected.  Some insist he has a “promise” to go alot higher, but we’ll see on June 27th. Comparison: Nicolas Batum

23.

Ind

 North Texas Tony Mitchell
C 6’9 230lbs Sophomore
Once considered a Lottery selection after his freshman season, Mitchell stock has slipped after a subpar 2nd season at North Texas.  He has all of the size and skill to be an outstanding PF at the next level but hasn’t quite put everything together yet.  His athletic abilities intrigue NBA GM’s and likely will be a late 1st Round selection in a down year for star players.  He’s an outstanding candidate to succeed David West once his contract is up.Comparison: Derrick Favors

24.

NY

Ohio State
DeShaun Thomas
SF/PF 6’7 220lbs Junior
Despite being a tad undersized and having only average athleticism, Thomas has been an elite scorer at both the HS and collegiate levels.  He won’t blow anyone over with his combine numbers but simply knows how to score like few others in this year’s draft.  It remains to be seen if his “stretch 4” type game can translate to the next level.  Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks need help scoring the basketball, making Thomas a prime prospect off the bench.Comparison: Luol Deng

25.

LAC

California

Allen Crabbe
SG 6’6 195lbs Junior
Not many on the East coast know about one of the Pac-12’s leading scorers and POY because of late start times.  But Crabbe is a prolific shooter with great size for the SG position.  He did have a well publicized run-in with his coach at Cal but has the outstanding athleticism to be a potential star at the next level.  With Jamal Crawford, Chauncey Billups, and Caron Butler getting older, Crabbe is nice value pick that fits a need going forward with the Clippers.Comparison: Danny Granger

26.

Min

Gonzaga

Kelly Olynyk
C   7’0 235lbs Junior
After biding his time on the bench for 2 seasons, the big-boddied legit 7 footer had a breakout junior season for the Zags.  Behind his timely scoring and capable rebounding, Olynyk helped Gonzaga finish the regular season as the nation’s top ranked team.  He lacks great athleticism and quickness but defends the pick-and-roll to perfection and stretches the “D” with his perimeter shooting abilities.Comparison: Spencer Hawes

27.

Den

UNC
Reggie Bullock
SF 6’7 200lbs Junior
Many were surprised that the sweet shooting forward decided to declare after his junior season, since he could have been a focal point of the Tarheels’ offense next season.  He’s an above 40% 3 point shooter and has gotten better as a rebounder and transition player.  With Andre Iguodala potentially leaving in free agency, Bullock is excellent insurance for the Nuggets.  Comparison: Jason Richardson

28.

SA

Spain
Lucas Nogueira C 7’0 220lbs International
The 21 year old Brazilian has been an NBA prospect for a few seasons but has lacked the toughness and physicality to be an NBA player.  “Bebe” had an outstanding season in Spain’s top league last year, prompting many to go as far as declare him a potential Lottery selection because of his rare combination of size, skill, and elite athletic ability.  The Spurs are known for plucking International gems, making Nogueira a no-brainer of he’s still on the board this late.Comparison: Sam Dalembert

29.

OKC

Pittsburgh Steven Adams
C 7’0 255lbs Freshman
After only one season at Pitt, and 2 seasons removed from playing exclusively in his native New Zealand, Adams has drawn a crowd of NBA executives to nearly every game played for the Panthers.  Scouts are enamored by is humongous hands and frame that could make him a legitimate center prospect in the NBA.  He’s still raw, but will ultimately be selected late in the first round on potential.Comparison: Luis Scola

30.

Pho

Kansas Jeff Withey
C 7’0 230lbs Senior
One of the nation’s best shot-blockers, Withey can help a club right away protecting the rim and rebounding, while not being a liability on offense.  He’s only average athletically and may already be a finished product, but Phoenix can use a steadying force in the middle as a rim protecting, hard-nosed big.Comparison: Joakim Noah

What a difference one year makes, when last year about this time seemingly everyone, including all of us here at THD, were salivating over HS phenom Shabazz Muhammed.

He was the nation’s top ranked high school player, by far the most prolific amateur scorer, and was projected by virtually every source as the unanimous #1 pick in 2013 NBA Draft, all prior to playing one minute of college basketball.

After continually showing out and dunking over the competition in every HS game shown on ESPN, some experts even proclaimed that Muhammed could be the second coming of future NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant.

He spurned several other high major programs like Kentucky and Duke to remain closer to home out West, committing to the fabled UCLA Bruins to be part of coach Ben Howland’s #1 ranked recruiting class prior to last season.

He accomplished every major HS basketball award last season including National POY, McDonald’s All American Game and Jordan Brand Classic MVP, as well as winning the 2012 Powerade Jamfest Dunk Contest, as HS’s best dunker.

But NCAA fans would have to wait to witness the prolific scorer as Muhammed was initially ruled ineligible, then was forced to sit out UCLA’s first 3 contests after accepting “illegal benefits” as an amateur player.

During the early going of the season, Muhammed appeared out of shape and struggled before finishing the season at a respectful 17.9 ppg and 5.2 rebounds and leading the Bruins back to the NCAA Tournament.

While most picked apart his game, constantly criticizing his averaging less than 1 assist per game, the real shocking news was that Shabazz was actually already 20, a year older than initially revealed, announcing that his father lied about his age to make him a more appealing prospect, raising character issues.

Fast forwarding to the 2013 NBA Draft Combine, and Muhammed’s stock again appears to be on the slide as quite a few NBA GM’s have gone on the record stating that the once prized HS prospect may not even be selected in this year’s Lottery and is more likely a mid 1st Round selection over concerns about attitude and lack of passing skills.

Most are concerned about a perceived selfish attitude and demeanor but he fact remains that even in a down crop of NBA prospects, Muhammed remains one of the few players, along with Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel and Kansas’ Ben McLemore with star potential in this year’s Draft.

In reality, Shabazz is still a rather young 20 years old, and can fill up the basket at arguably the best rate of any player coming out of college this season.  While his expectations have undoubtedly been lowered, I still think a comparison to Houston’s James Harden may be a good one, as a rare left-handed prolific scorer.

He measured out a legit 6’6 in shoes with a 6’11 reach at the 2013 Draft Combine but had a surprising 10% body fat, one of the worst in attendance.

Where will Shabazz Muhammed get drafted and what are his pro prospects?

In our initial Mock Draft, the Top 10 picks were dominated by big men like Cody Zeller, Nerlens Noel, and Mason Plumlee.  But since then several other position players have played their way to the top of most draftboards like freshmen Ben McLemore and Anthony Bennett as well as junior swingman Victor Oladipo from Indiana.

Unlike many other years, the 2013 NBA Draft has been described by many experts as being a notoriously weak crop of prospects with only a select few potential draftees being projected as future All Stars or even starting players.  As a result, how players produce and how far they lead their teams in the NCAA Tournament will go along way towards improving their draft stocks.

As such, these Mock Draft rankings are based on potential with this year’s Draft order based on current team records from the NBA regular season and outstanding trades, without taking into consideration for team needs as of yet. These are only my choices and not the consensus picks of all of The Hoop Doctors writers, with that said here is my 2013 Mock Draft:Version 2.0.

Draft Order College Team Player Position Physical

1.

Cha

Kentucky Nerlens Noel
Center 6’11     225lbs    Freshman
Despite the devastating knee injury, Noel still has the most potential of any player at the next level.  Possessing in insane wingspan, elite leaping ability, and a developing offensive skill set, most NBA scouts agree that the still only 18 year old big man is well worth the risk at #1 in such a weak draft.

2.

Orl

 Kansas Ben McLemore
Guard 6’5    195lbs     Freshman
The redshirt freshman has been a tad inconsistent but his talent as an elite shooter and scorer are obviously there.  The comparisons to Ray Allen and Brad Beal are real as this year’s most technically sound shooter in this year’s Draft.

3.

Cle

Georgetown Otto Porter Jr
 Forward 6’8     215lbs     Sophomore
One of the fastest risers in this year’s class, Porter is the nation’s most versatile player.  Many compare him to a more offensive minded Andre Iguodala, as a do-it-all game changer as one of the finalists for National Player of the Year.

4.

Pho

UCLA
Shabazz Muhammed
SF 6’6     225lbs     Freshman
Although he started a bit slow during his first season at UCLA, Muhammed has adjusted nicely, leading the Bruins in scoring, showing an especially elite touch from behind the arc, once a supposed weakness.  I think the early comparisons to Kobe are a bit steep but along with Noel, Shabazz has elite potential.  Recent admissions he lied about his age bring character issues into question.

5.

Det

OK State Marcus Smart
PG 6’4     225lbs     Freshman
Although initially seen as a combo guard, Smart has molded nicely into one of the best playmaking lead guards in the NCAA.  He possesses elite passing ability, has great instincts, and outstanding size at the PG position at the next level.  Poor man’s James Harden.

6.

Sac

UNLV Anthony Bennett
PF 6’7     240lbs     Freshman
For most of the season, Bennett was regarded as the nation’s best freshman until Marcus Smart narrowed the gap.  Anthony is a physically imposing, yet a bit undersized power forward that reminds many of a vintage Larry Johnson before the injuries, but with better range from behind the arc.

7.

Min

 Indiana Victor Oladipo
SG 6’4     215lbs     Junior
As arguably the most improved player in the nation, Oladipo is an athletic freak that excels on the defensive side of the ball.  His offensive game has improved dramatically and uses grit and determination to finish at the rim as well as any player in the country.

8.

NO

Maryland
Alex Len
C 7’1     250lbs     Sophomore
The former Ukrainian native has excelled in his sophomore season with the Terps.  He has above average athletic ability for a 7 footer, sets amazing screens, and has shooting range out to 18 feet.  Alex has a very high ceiling as a natural shot-blocker.

9.

OKC

Michigan
Trey Burke
PG 6’0     190lbs     Sophomore
Universally regarded as the nation’s best PG, Burke has proven his worth on the collegiate level as a pinpoint passer and tough as nails defender, true leader, and has a heart bigger than his stature.  Trey is one of the fastest risers as of late and remind many of a poor man’s Allen Iverson.

10.

Was

Syracuse Michael Carter-Williams
PG 6’6     185lbs     Sophomore
Possessing incredible size for the point guard position, Carter-Williams has both excelled and been erratic as the Orange’s starting PG.  He is an elite passer, is a stout defender, but is still raw as a jumpshooter.  Character and age may come into question.

11.

Phi

Baylor Isaiah Austin
 PF/C 7’0     205lbs     Freshman
The definition of raw talent in a still growing and developing 7 foot plus frame.  Austin uses his immense size and length to block shots with ease but remains rather thin and loses post position far too easily on the collegiate level.  With that being said, he has offensive range to beyond the 3 point arc and has immense potential once he is a finished product.

12.

Por

Michigan Glenn Robinson III
SF 6’6     210lbs     Freshman
As the son of former NCAA POY and NBA All Star Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson, GR3 is a smooth, above the rim athlete with star potential.  Although not yet the elite shooter as his father, he has elite leaping ability, an NBA ready body, and shows a nack for scoring from nearly anywhere on the court.

13.

Dal

Indiana Cody Zeller
C 6’11    240lbs     Sophomore
Easily this season’s most all around talented big man, Zeller has all of the tools to be a very good pro prospect.  He runs the floor better than any other big and has a through the roof basketball IQ.  The only concern is lack of toughness and willingness to bang in the post.  Zeller was clearly outplayed by the Syracuse big men in March Madness, and his stock is dropping.

14.

Utah

Duke Mason Plumlee
C 6’11     240lbs     Senior
He’s rarity as a near 7 footer with elite athleticism, regularly playing above the rim.  He has finally started to put his all around game together in his senior season at Duke and is a huge reason the Blue Devils are in the hunt for another National Championship.  He’s an above average rebounder and shot-blocker but still remains rather raw offensively.

15.

Mil

Kentucky
Willie Cauley-Stein
C 7’0     245lbs     Freshman
When #1 HS prospect Nerlens Noel went down for the season, fellow 7 footer, yet less heralded freshman big man, Cauley-Stein has taken advantage of the increased playing time.  He has NBA size and while he may not jump out of the gym, has decent athleticism as a former HS football star.  While he may not be ready yet for the next level, his stock will likely drop next season with the next star Kentucky class coming in.

16.

Cle

France Rudy Gobert
 C 7’1     230lbs     International
As this year’s version of the top rated International prospect, the still only 21 year old Gobert has struggled this season in the French Leagues.  But he has an insane 7’9 wingspan and above average mobility but remains a project.  Is he the next Shawn Bradley or Yao Ming?

17.

Bos

Lehigh CJ McCollum
G 6’3     190lbs     Senior
Prior to his season ending foot injury early this season, McCollum was a potential Lottery selection as one of the nation’s premier scorers.  At 6’3, he’s a tweaner, but has the skill set to excel at either guard position.  He may be the first senior taken and has big game experience, like when his smallish Lehigh team upset Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

18.

Atl

Kentucky
Alex Poythress
SF 6’7     230lbs     Freshman
At this point, Poythress is more athlete than ball player.  he has insane abilities and natural instincts that can’t be taught but has lacked the determination and drive to put it all together.  If he ever does, he has potential as and elite, hardnosed SF in the mold of Thaddeus Young.  He would benefit greatly from another year in college.

19.

Bos

Gonzaga Kelly Olynyk
C 7’0     240lbs     Junior
Despite a few subpar years with the Zags, Olynyk had emerged as the leader of the nation’s #1 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs entering the Tourney.  And even after his team was eliminated early in March Madness, Olynyk played well, averaging 24 points and 10 boards.  He’s only average athletically and doesn’t blow you away with his physique but has shown the footspeed to be a great pick-and-roll defender in the pros.

20.

Atl

Ohio State DeShaun Thomas
 SF 6’7     225lbs     Junior
Despite only average athleticism, Thomas is one of the premier scorers in the nation.  He can fill it up from anywhere on the court and is one of the few players in the nation to put up 20 ppg for the season.  He was measured with a 6’9 wingspan, helping the notion that he is too small for PF, and too slow for SF at the next level.  Has potential as an elite 6th man.

21.

Utah

Creighton
Doug McDermott
 SF 6’7     225lbs     Junior
As one of the finalists for this season’s NCAA POY Award, McDermott has excelled as a scorer and rebounder in a small conference.  Many are concerned about his lack of competition despite finishing 2nd in the nation in scoring but he shot over 50% both from the field and from behind the arc.  Comparisons have ranged from anywhere from the next Larry Bird to Adam Morrison.

22.

BK

UNC James Michael-McAdoo
 PF 6’9     240lbs     Freshman
If he would have come out last year, McAdoo would have been a bonafide Lottery pick but has seen his game show some weaknesses in his sophomore season.  While he has a chiseled, NBA ready physique, tends to play too much on the perimeter rather than use his elite athleticism and 7’1 wingspan to block shots.  He has unreal potential as a rebounder, scorer, and shot-blocker but has yet to put it all together.

23.

Ind

Murray St Isaiah Canaan
PG 6’1     205lbs     Senior
While his team had a better run last season, Canaan is a tough, strong, well rounded guard that projects well as an instant offense 6th man at the next level.  He’s a combo guard, making him even more valuable.  Although he’s a bit small, Isaiah has been the go-to-guy for his squad the past 2 seasons, making a NCAA Tourney run in 2012 and losing in the Ohio Valley Conf title game this year.  Best case scenario……Jameer Nelson.

24.

NY

Kansas
Jeff Withey
C 7’0     235lbs     Senior
As one of the nation’s top shot-blockers, legit 7 footers, and coming from a Top 5 program, Withey will be in high demand on draft day.  Although he possesses only average athleticism, he makes up for those deficiencies with a high basketball IQ and extreme effort.  Since he is a senior, he may be a finished product but could help a club immediately as a defender and rim protector.

25.

Min

Kentucky Archie Goodwin
SG 6’4     200lbs     Freshman
The initial comparison for Goodwin was to that of Russell Westbrook because of some unreal athleticism from the guard position, but those expectations have grown tepid over his uneven play despite leading the Cats in scoring.  His inconsistencies have dropped him off of most 1st Round Mocks and he has hinted at returning to UK for his sophomore campaign.

26.

LAC

Michigan
Tim Hardaway Jr
 SG 6’6     210lbs     Junior
Possessing prototypical size and natural instincts from his NBA All Star father, Hardaway Jr can light up the scoreboard with any player in the nation.  He’s especially deft in the midrange, a lost art in the NBA and can take over a game with his NBA range perimeter shooting.  He’s still rather thin for the next level and must improve defensively.

27.

Den

South Dakota St
Nate Wolters
PG 6’4     195lbs     Senior
The nation’s leading scorer reminds many of Luke Ridnour and with the recent success of players emerging from small schools like Damian Lillard and Norris Cole, some GM will take a flyer on the high scoring lead guard.  He did score 53 points in a single game this year, the most in the past 3 seasons.

28.

OKC

Miami
Shane Larkin
 PG 5’11     180lbs     Sophomore
Behind a spectacular sophomore season that saw him take his game and his team to an elite level, Larkin has emerged as one of the top PG prospects in this year’s draft.  Although slight in stature, he’s well put together and has shown elite athleticism, leadership, and an ability to score the basketball.  Being the son of HOF shortstop Barry Larkin can only help his character.

29.

SA

Michigan State
Adrien Payne
 PF 6’10     240lbs     Junior
With an unbelievable combination of height, length, and above the rim athleticism, Payne has taken longer than anticipated to develop from an elite HS prospect to star collegiate player.  He has tremendous potential and has an at times unstoppable motor but has been inconsistent and has squabbled with teammates.  His stock is on the rise after leading the Spartans on another deep NCAA Tourney run and his recent development of an outside shot.

30.

Pho

Texas Myck Kabongo
PG 6’1     180lbs     Sophomore
Even though he was forced to miss a majority of his sophomore season, the once promising HS recruit has added some bulk and explosion to his game upon his return to the Longhorns.  He’s an extremely quick guard, and really excels on the move, with an innate gift of floor vision.  He tends to lean a bit too much towards the highlight reel play rather than the easy ones but as a best case scenario, some see him as a Top 10 selection if he returns next season.

Now that the 2012-2013 NCAA season is officially underway and we’ve gotten an initial look at next year’s crop of potential NBA Lottery picks, it’s time to formulate our first Mock Draft. (For many more 2013 NBA Mock Drafts from around the web, check out THD’s database here)

This year’s field, through the first month of the season, has been dominated by some outstanding play from a number of players all still vying for the #1 pick like Indiana’s Cody Zeller, Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel, UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad, and North Carolina’s James Michael-McAdoo.

As such, these Mock Draft rankings are based on potential with this year’s Draft order based on current team records from the NBA regular season and outstanding trades, without taking into consideration for team needs as of yet. These are only my choices and not the consensus picks of all of The Hoop Doctors writers, with that said here is my 2013 Mock Draft:Version 1.0.

Draft Order   College Team   Player   Position   Physical

1.

Was

Indiana Cody Zeller
C 6’11   240lbs   Sophomore
The “Big Handsome” made a wise decision returning to Indiana for his sophomore season as he’s in the mix for the top overall pick in 2013 as the Hoosiers make a run at the National Title.  Zeller’s rebounding numbers are the only concern as the athletic big man is a true competitor and is as fundamentally sound as any big man in the nation.

2.

Cle

 Kentucky Nerlens Noel
 C 6’11   230lbs   Freshman
Following in the large footsteps of last year’s #1 pick from Kentucky Anthony Davis, Noel is a game-changing shot-blocker and defensive presence in the painted area.  While his offensive game is still a work in progress, Noel has been impressive rebounding and protecting the rim as well as being an above average passer for a big man.

3.

NO

 UCLA Shabazz Muhammad
 SF 6’6   230lbs   Freshman
After finally being declared eligible to play, Muhammed has appeared a bit out of shape despite averaging 20ppg over his last 3 games.  He has a scary upside many liken to Kobe Bryant as he was a prolific, unstoppable offensive force on the HS level.  He will only get better as the season goes on.

4.

Det

North Carolina James Michael-McAdoo
PF 6’9   240lbs   Sophomore
The former highly touted HS player is finally getting his chance to play major minutes this season with above average results.  He started like a house on fire but has struggled as of late against bigger defenders.  Although he has prototypical forward size for the next level, there’s a real concern over which position he will play going forward as he’s too slow to guard the perimeter and not strong enough against low post bigs.  Definate Top 10 talent with potential.

5.

Cha

Kansas Ben McLemore  SG 6’5   195lbs     Freshman
As one of the fastest risers in this year’s crop, the redshirt freshman has emerged as Kansas’ go-to-guy on offense.  He’s shown improvement taking the ball to the basket but remains an elite catch-and-shoot player in the mold of Ray Allen.  He could be this year’s version of Brad Beal and sneak into the Top 5 picks.

6.

OKC

UNLV Anthony Bennett  SF/PF 6’7   240lbs     Freshman
The fabulous freshman has made a seamless transition from dominating the HS ranks to being an NCAA POY candidate, helping to keep the Runnin Rebels among the Top 25 teams in the nation.  He reminds many of former Rebel Larry Johnson as an undersized power forward that went on to have a good NBA career before the injuries.  Bennett has been a beast on the boards as well as scoring from almost anywhere on the court.

7.

Sac

Georgetown  Otto Porter  SF 6’8   215lbs   Sophomore
A tremendous athlete known as a stout defender, Porter has improved his offensive game to make him a potential Lottery pick next June.  Although still a bit thin, he is a high energy sparkplug in the mold of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist at Kentucky last season.

8.

Pho

Maryland
Alex Len
 C 7’1   230lbs   Sophomore
Once the Ukrainian born big man finally served his 10 game suspension last season, he showed tons of potential during his freshman season.  But now in his sophomore campaign, the legit 7 footer has become a focal point for the Terps.  He is a superb athlete that already averages a double-double despite needing to add some bulk.  Many compare him to Toronto Raptors rookie Jonas Valanciunas.

9.

Phi

Kentucky  Alex Poythress  SF 6’8   240lbs     Freshman
Although he has been widely inconsistent in the early parts of his freshman season, Poythress has both the size and tools to be a very good NBA player someday.  He’s super athletic and is a tremendous above the rim finisher but is a bit of a tweener in that he lacks a definitive position, either SF or PF.  He compares favorably to former Top 5 pick Derrick Williams.

10.

LAL

 Baylor  Isaiah Austin  C 7’0   225lbs   Freshman
The hype surrounding Baylor freshman Austin is real.  He’s the nephew of former NBA vet Ike Austin and wears the eye goggles to match.  His amazing 7’4 wingspan makes him an elite rim protector but is still raw on the offensive end.  Considering he is still growing and already a legit 7 foot plus at 18 years old, many are intrigued at just how huge Austin could wind up when paired with his skill set.  Needs to add bulk.

11.

Por

 Syracuse Michael Carter-Williams
PG 6’6   185lbs   Sophomore
After sitting virtually his entire freshman season behind upperclassmen Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche, Carter-Williams has burst onto the collegiate scene and into NBA Lottery conversation as the nation’s leading assist man.  He’s a rare combination of speed, skill, and size that we haven’t seen since Anfernee Hardaway atthe point guard position.

12.

Orl

 Kentucky Archie Goodwin
 SG/PG 6’4   200lbs     Freshman
Possessing perhaps the most athleticism of any player in this year’s Draft, Goodwin reminds many of Thunder superstar Russell Westbrook.  Goodwin is more of a combo guard and hasn’t yet put all of his talents together as he has frustrated Coach Calipari at times with his inconsistencies this season.  With that being said, how many players can score 20 points in a game as easy as Goodwin?

13.

Dal

Michigan  Trey Burke  PG 6’0   190lbs   Sophomore
After flirting with the NBA Draft after his freshman season, Burke made the right choice to return to Ann Arbor to team with SG Tim Hardaway Jr in an attempt to win a National Title.  Although still a bit slight of built, many are beginning to compare Trey with NBA All Star Chris Paul as the total package from the PG position.

14.

Utah

Duke Mason Plumlee
 C 7’0   240lbs           Senior
We all were told for 3 seasons that the uber athletic 7 footer was going to take that next step towards becoming an elite level big man on the collegiate level.  In his senior campaign, Plumlee has finally become that player as one of the leading candidates for NCAA POY.  He seems much more harnessed as an offensive player in addition to grabbing 10+ rebounds, and 2 blocks per contest.  There’s no doubting Plumlee is key to how far Duke goes this season.

15.

Atl

North Texas
Tony Mitchell
 PF 6’8   240lbs   Sophomore
Although the sophomore big man’s stock has been dropping lately, he has all of the tools to be a good NBA player.  Tony reminds many of former #2 pick Derrick Williams as an athletic tweener forward lacking a true position at the next level.  He posted stellar numbers as a freshman last season but his stats have slipped in the early going this season.  Some also site lack of quality competition as another question mark.

16.

Bos

 France Rudy Gobert
 C  7’1   230lbs   International
Perhaps this year’s most intriguing international prospect, Gobert has an unreal wingspan(reportedly 7’9), matched with some great mobility for a player his size.  At only 20 years of age, Gobert’s potential is through the roof as a defensive stopper initially but shows progress offensively within the painted area.  Although he needs to add bulk, some NBA GM’s are enamored with his Manute Bol-like shot-blocking ability at such a young age.

17.

BK

Lehigh CJ McCollum
 SG 6’3   190lbs           Senior
The nation caught a small glimpse of just how good the undersized 2 guard can be as he almost single-handedly helped his tiny Lehigh Mountain Hawks upset Duke in the NCAA Tournament.  McCollum is one of the nation’s best scorers and rebounds well for his position.  He may be this year’s Damian Lillard but he must improve his ball-handling to play PG at the next level.

18.

Min

OK State
Marcus Smart  PG 6’4   225lbs     Freshman
The highlight reel combo guard is a freshman in name only as he already has the physique and game of a seasoned collegiate upperclassmen.  While other more highly touted freshman have struggled, Smart has been arguably one of the nation’s best players period, making many experts’ POY lists.  He’s a poor man’s Lebron James, scoring, rebounding, handing out assists, and even playing above average defense from the PG position.

19.

Ind

 Creighton Doug McDermott
 PF 6’8   225lbs           Junior
While many have already proclaimed McDermott this year’s version of Jimmer Fredette, albeit a few inches taller, one thing’s for sure that he can definitely fill up the scoreboard.  Once a HS teammate of former UNC standout Harrison Barnes, Doug has thrived on mid-major competition as a collegian.  Taking his team on a deep NCAA Tourney run against elite teams would do wonders for his stock.

20.

Den

Ohio State DeShaun Thomas
 SF/PF 6’7   230lbs           Junior
With Jared Sullinger now off playing in the NBA, Thomas has emerged as the Buckeyes’ best player.  He’s a monster scoring the basketball and rebounds well for a SF.  He’s a bit of a tweaner and is only average defensively but he’s a good enough scorer to warrant a 1st Round selection as a 6th man.

21.

Mil

Michigan
Glenn Robinson III  SF 6’7   210lbs     Freshman
While he may not be as good of a prospect as his father Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson before him, Michigan’s fab freshman is already the team’s 3rd best player and has all of the skills to be an NBA player.  Robinson is a highlight reel player that plays above the rim that needs more seasoning but in a weak draft class, Robinson has potential as a SF scorer at the next level.

22.

Chi

 Kentucky Willie Cauley-Stein C 7’0   245lbs     Freshman
It’s a proven fact that in concurrent seasons, Coach Cal has sent upwards of 5-6 players each year NBA bound.  That bodes well for Cauley-Stein, who may not have as high of a ceiling as fellow Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel, but is a hard-working, blue collar type of center that compares well to the Hornets’ Robin Lopez.

23.

Atl

 Kansas  Jeff Withey  C 7’0   235lbs           Senior
Jeff is arguably the nation’s best shot-blocker, capable of controlling a game by his defense alone.  He has made strides in his game on the offensive end, learning from past Kansas draftees like Thomas Robinson, the Morris twins, and Cole Aldrich.  On the downside, Withey may have already hit his peak as far as potential.

24.

Utah

NC State
 CJ Leslie  SF/PF 6’9   200lbs           Junior
Leslie has been on the NBA’s radar since his freshman season with the Wolfpack.  Possessing through the roof athleticism, the former HS teammate of John Wall has refined his game from just an elite leaper to above average rebounder and capable scorer in pick-and-roll situations.  Leslie remains rather thin by NBA standards but has gotten by on raw talent in college.

25.

SA

Florida  Patric Young  PF/C  6’9   250lbs          Junior
Once compared to Dwight Howard as an elite HS player and future NBA stud, Young’s development has been slow at Florida.  He is a chiseled, physical specimen with unreal strength but is still rather raw offensively.  Many also thought he would blossom into a better rebounder considering his physical tools but is undoubtedly an NBA caliber athlete.

26.

Cle

Baylor
Pierre Jackson
PG  5’10   185lbs        Senior
In a rather weak PG class, Jackson ranks as one of the best floor generals in the country.  He’s this year’s Kemba Walker, possessing lightning quick end-to-end speed, ankle-breaking handles, and above the rim hops.  Defensively, many are concerned about his lack of overall size defending the NBA’s bigger guards.

27.

Min

Colorado
Andre Roberson
SF 6’7   210lbs     Junior
Not many outside fans East of the Mississippi know much about Roberson, once of the nation’s best all around players.  He’s very similar to Denver’s Andre Iguodala as a do-it-all forward and elite defender.  He’s still rather thin by NBA standards but has elite level athleticism that belongs at the next level.

28.

NY

South Dakota St
Nate Wolters
 PG 6’4   195lbs           Senior
Considering the success of taking lesser known talent from small schools like Damian Lillard and Norris Cole is recent drafts, NBA GM’s are all over Wolters, one of the nation’s best scorers.  But playing against lesser competition, is he the next Steve Nash or Luke Ridnour?

29.

LAC

Michigan Tim Hardaway Jr
 SG 6’6   190lbs           Junior
As the son of former NBA standout and Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway Sr, elite caliber talent has transferred from father to son.  While dad was a game changing floor general, Jr can score the rock as well as any player in the nation from the wing position.  He has unlimited 3 point range and can score from anywhere on the floor.  More of a scorer than great shooter, the Wolverines will go as far as Tim can take them.

30.

OKC

Croatia Dario Saric
SF/PF  6’10   220lbs   International
After dominating any and all competition in the European U-18 Championships this Summer, Saric is an intriguing International prospect.  Although he has the size and low post moves to play in the paint, he possesses above average ball-handling and passing skills that translate to all 5 positions on the floor.  Turning only 19 during the 2013 calendar year, many will view Saric as the “next” Dirk Nowitzki because of his advanced offensive skill at such a young age.
